Antonym: Dissembling - 
Children learn to dissemble at a surprisingly early age.

 



Discernment - insight ability to see things clearly
Her lack of discernment led to his disastrous choice of roles in the play.





Antonym: Imprudence - lacking good judgment
The student's imprudence led her to a big problem.


Disdain - arrogant scorn; contempt
He regarded their proposal with disdain.



Antonym: Admiration - an object of esteem
I have a great admiration for the courage she showed.



Abstract - theoretical; lacking substance
The word poem is concrete, the word poetry is abstract.


Antonym: Concrete - naming a real thing or class of things
It's helpful to have concrete examples of how words are used in text.


Temperate - moderate; restrained
The temperate woman had a mild attitude.



Antonym: Immoderate -  exceeding just, usual, or suitable bounds
The young widow remarried with what was regarded as immoderate haste by most observers.


Enigma - mystery
The enigma puzzled the class.


Antonym: Understanding - comprehension
He has a thorough understanding of the subject.




Inevitable - unavoidable; bound to happen
Getting wet is inevitable when your washing your dog.


Antonym: Avoid - to keep away from
It is hard to avoid the ice cream sitting in front of you.




Eccentric - not conventional; a little kooky; irregular
Her eccentric ways made her unique.

Antonym: Realism - concern for fact or reality and rejection of the impractical and visionary
The realism of her dream was alarming.






Provincial - limited in outlook to one's own small corner of the world; narrow
The space was very provincial and couldn't fit the desk.


Antonym: Sophisticate - to alter deceptively
There's no need to sophisticate something that is beautiful in its simplicity.


Futile - hopeless; without effect
Our hard work was futile for the rain had ruined our crops.


Antonym: Effective - producing a decided, decisive, or desired effect.
It's a simple but effective technique.
